Indy Racing League (IRL) Tickets – Power Takes Lucky No. 3
It’s been more than three months since Indycar hero, Team Penske racer and former Dancing with the Stars champion Helio Castroneves was indicted by the federal government with seven counts of tax evasion and conspiracy to commit fraud, but with the racecar driver’s trial still yet to come (scheduled for March 2 in Miami) Penske Racing president Tim Cindric has chosen to make an active decision in advance regarding the future of his team. That decision’s name is Will Power, and he’s been called to the forefront of IndyCar action as Castroneves’ temporary replacement in Team Penske’s No. 3 entry.
Power, a former competitor with KV Racing and 27-year-old driver from Toowoomba, Australia, was introduced this week as Penske Racing’s newest addition and Castroneves’ replacement for 2009 preseason testing and perhaps even the year, depending on how the latter’s trial goes in March. Castroneves could face 35 years in federal prison if charged on all seven counts of tax evasion and conspiracy to commit fraud, but the IndyCar speedster could be back in the driver’s seat for the league’s season opener at the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on April 5 should the trial go in his favor.
The next race 33-year-old speed racer Castroneves must win is his early March trial, but he remains upbeat in news conferences despite a possible jail sentence, claiming, “My life, it’s definitely about racing. I can’t wait for this thing to be over, for me to be back in the race car, do what I love most, which is racing.” Castroneves, a Sao Paulo, Brazil native, joined Team Penske in 2000 and started making tracks in the IRL right then and there, becoming the first driver since Al Unser in the early 1970s to win the Indianapolis 500 (considered the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing”) two years in a row, capturing the title in 2001 and again in 2002. He remains the only driver ever to have won the Indy 500 in his first two attempts, and is the youngest driver in IRL history to win the race twice. The Brazilian racer has won 14 total IndyCar Series races for Team Penske since 2001, finishing the league second overall to Target Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon in the 2008 championship.
Will Power, the man set to replace Castroneves until his trial is over (and perhaps even longer) is in a desirable spot to jumpstart his IRL career. The native Australian has formerly raced open-wheel formula cars in Europe, racing with KV Racing Technology and making a move to the U.S. in 2006 in order to compete in the Champ Car World Series. His strength in road races makes him an asset to Penske Racing, and his dominating performances at the pole in last October’s Surfers Paradise race in Australia and again in Long Beach at the end of last season put him at the forefront of up-and-coming drivers. While Power doesn’t have the experience that Castroneves has, he now has the chance to show the racing world what it’s been missing. To catch Power in action as he slams the pedal to the floor, get Indy Racing League (IRL) tickets from http://www.stubhub.com/irl-tickets-indy-car-series and enjoy the sound of speed!

Outrageous Fortune [VHS] $2.68 Sometimes a movie works despite all its faults. Outrageous Fortune has a flimsy, formulaic script, so-so production values, and an odd combination of stars, but somehow it’s engaging and fun. Shelley Long and Bette Midler play two struggling actresses–one a hoity-toity priss and the other a brassy slob–who learn they’ve been sleeping with the same guy (Peter Coyote) when he gets blown up in a te… |

Popeye [VHS] $4.99 Nothing interests filmmaker Robert Altman more than a contained culture that mixes bare humanity with local eccentricity (think of his M*A*S*H and Nashville). So Altman’s Popeye (1980), based on the old comic strip, works best as a portrait of a busy, cluttered, cartoonish town called Sweethaven. But it is much less successful as a comprehensible story about the famous sailor with massive forear… |

Quantum Leap: The Complete First Season $13.99 They’ll be dancing (well, leaping maybe) in the streets now that the first season of Quantum Leap, voted one of the 25 best cult series ever by TV Guide, has come to home video, a decade after its final year (1994) on the air (the pilot episode was released on DVD in ’98). Richard Petty coming to IRL, What do you think about this?
The King as he is known as in Nascar, teaming up with Dreyer & Reinbold Racing to field a car in the Indy 500 with John Andretti as the driver. How do you think they will do?
T-bone, I’m ready to drive it, I think I could avoid bump day as well.
I don’t know. I guess they’ll do ok. As long as they get some sponsors, some good engineers and strategists on board, I don’t see why they wouldn’t do well. I doubt John Andretti will finish in the top 10, but they’ll do ok.

Sebastien Bourdais and Graham Rahal Excited to Join the Mazda Grand Prix This Weekend
After a six week interval from Champ Car racing, McDonald’s® driver Sebastien Bourdais and Medi | Zone driver Graham Rahal are excitedly anticipating their return to competition this weekend in the Mazda Grand Prix of Portland Presented by Joe’s Sports and Outdoors and sponsored by Mazda the maker of Mazda spark plug. Bourdais is hoping to continue his streak that earned him wins in the past two events and also make up for the lost opportunity last year to win a series-record fifth consecutive victory in Portland while Rahal hopes to add to the “firsts” that have come on this track.
According to Bourdais who has finished on the podium here in three of this year’s four races including a win from pole in 2004, “We missed a chance to win five in a row last year in Portland for the McDonald’s team. The start was really messed up last year. Basically Bruno, my teammate, thought he was in command and he should have been but the flagman just threw the green flag and the whole right side of the grid never went. It was a disaster and we ended up seventh after Turn 1. It was basically tough from there but we still had a good recovery and made it back to third. We have a very fast McDonald’s car but a little better luck would have helped at the start. ”
For the last 23 races held at the 1.964-mile road course, Newman/Haas Racing (NHR) won seven with the most recent coming from Bourdais in 2004 from pole. Mario Andretti also won the pole for the team in the first event here in 1984 while Bruno Junqueira earned for the team its fifth last year on this track.
The team was able to snap 15 top-three podium finishes out of the 23 races. The first three events of the season were held on street courses in Las Vegas, Long Beach and Houston, and on this season Bourdais is looking forward to returning to a road course after a successful test here at the beginning of the six week break in May.
Bourdais who took over the lead in the point standings after his second win of the season in Round 3 in Houston and is only three points ahead of Will Power in the standings (73-70) said, “We tested well at Portland and hope to apply that experience to the race weekend and others after it. Testing is just that; you can’t say if it’s going to work for sure. I think it is going to be nice to race on the road courses. It’s a different stretch during the season. We’ve had three back to back on the streets and after the Portland road course race it gets pretty crazy again but we’ll get back in the groove after the six week break. ”
During the six weeks interval Bourdais has remained busy and has driven a Champ Car, Formula One car and Peugeot sports car in preparation for the 24 Hours of Le Mans that would be follow the Portland race in his hometown of Le Mans, France on June 16.
Bourdais who will travel from France to Portland, a 9-hour time difference, for the race and return to his homeland on Monday said, “I didn’t have much of a break since the last race in Houston, that’s for sure. After Houston I went to Le Mans and did a 24 hour endurance test with Peugeot (24 Hours of Le Mans on June 16), then the Portland test, go to the Bahamas for my honeymoon with Claire which we never had. Then I went to France for a test with Toro Rosso and then the Champ Car PR tour in Brussels and Paris before I came back to the States for a day before going to the test at Mont Tremblant. Then I went to the pre-qualifying test for the 24 Hours of Le Mans before I come to Portland. It never stopped. ”
He also added, “I am looking forward to getting back to a road course. Usually street races have always been my favorite but when you start off with three street races in a row its nice to take a step back and go to where racing originated – at the proper road courses like Portland. For us it was a great experience to test at Portland before the race to see how physical the place is in a Champ Car since I had never been there in a Champ Car. Although a lot of teams tested there I think it will give us a leg up once we come back for race weekend since we’ll have a baseline for the car setup. The test was great. Any time I can get in the car is good for me at this point. ”
The victories earned by Mario and Michael Andretti, Nigel Mansell, Paul Tracy, Christian Fittipaldi, Cristiano da Matta, Bruno Junqueira, Bourdais and Oriol Servia have brought the team a total of 99 wins after Bourdais drove to victory in the previous race in Houston. The team will now focus on winning another – their milestone 100th. Also, Champ Car star Paul Tracy will make his return to the series after recovering from an injury in a practice crash in Round 2 in Long Beach which forced him to miss two races.

Delphi’s Pact to Echo Throughout the Industry
Delphi Corp.’s momentous wage pact with the United Auto Workers union, which rank-and-file workers approved by a wide margin, promises to echo throughout the industry’s tumult-ridden supplier base, with parts manufacturers and other unions likely to borrow aspects of the deal, industry analysts say.
Sixty-eight percent of UAW members at Delphi plants across the country voted in favor of the pact, the company announced last Friday. The deal, which gives veteran workers cash payouts in lieu of wage and benefit cuts, clears the way for Delphi to emerge from bankruptcy and stop the threat of a strike that could have significantly injured General Motors Corp., Delphi’s largest customer. The production of GM’s Saturn catalytic converters and other domestic auto parts could have been crippled.
While other suppliers are not likely to copy the pact verbatim, some aspects are bound to lure cash-poor companies and unions frantic to hang onto jobs. “This is precedent-setting within the supplier base,” said David Cole, the chairman of the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor. “Any of the parts suppliers that are organized by the UAW will have some interest in what was done as a part of this bargaining. They will look at this as a pattern.”
Cole said that the wage-lowering aspects of the Delphi deal could be attractive to ACH. But spokeswoman Della DiPietro said that the ACH is in a markedly different contract situation than Delphi because its contracts are being negotiated plant-by-plant between the union and buyers. One plant has been sold and seven have potential purchasers. “What worked for Delphi and GM might not work for other suppliers,” DiPietro said.
The auto industry’s turnaround plans have hit suppliers hard. Detroit’s Big Three are slashing production amid declining market share, resulting to fewer and smaller orders for suppliers. Meanwhile, the automakers are being forced by the increasing cost of raw materials used to manufacture vehicles, keeping the heat on suppliers to reduce prices.
Several high-profile parts manufacturers have filed for bankruptcy in the past, including Southfield’s Collins & Aikman Corp and Toledo’s Dana Corp. Additionally, the Ford Motor Co. is in the process of liquidating the facilities of Visteon Corp., its former parts operation. The Dearborn automaker created the Automotive Component Holdings LLC, to dispose of the plants.
With approval of the Delphi deal, about 4,000 of the supplier’s 17,000 UAW workers will be offered a payout of $105,000 over three years. In return, their pay will be reduced from about $27 an hour to a maximum of $18.50 starting on the first of October.
Cutting the deal and having it ratified by the UAW was the biggest hurdle to Delphi’s exit from bankruptcy, a process started nearly two years ago when the parts manufacturer filed for Chapter 11. A pact also was needed to finalize a $3.4 billion deal to recapitalize Delphi. Prospective investors include Appaloosa Capital Management LP.
The UAW announced its vote results last Friday with a posting on its Web site. Production workers favored the deal by a 65-35 percent margin and skilled trades workers approved it 79-21 percent.
More than 80 percent of workers agreed to the concessions at Saginaw Steering Gear. Mike Hanley, the president of a large UAW local in Saginaw, said that the agreement proves that UAW members can change with the global economy.
The Delphi deal also signals that in tough times the union and automakers are able to work together and agree on meaningful compromises, said corporate restructuring expert Gregory Charleston, the managing director of Conway, MacKenzie & Dunleavy in Detroit. “It’s pretty encouraging in terms of both parties being willing to come up with something that works,” he said.
